New Vee Kalnins sculptural fountain installed at KCC

Sculpture Rhom-Petals, photo by Ryan FlathauBATTLE CREEK, May 8, 2012 – A new sculptural fountain designed and constructed by Tekonsha artist Viesturs "Vee" Kalnins has been installed in the reflecting pool by the Morris Learning Resource Center on the Battle Creek campus of Kellogg Community College.

The sculpture project was sponsored by the Kellogg Community Foundation's Art on Campus Initiative, the mission of which is to provide art experiences on the campuses of KCC. In a statement, Kalnins said the design for the fountain sculpture – titled "Rhom-Petals" – began by "creatively playing off of faceted globe forms." Theses globe forms are rhombicuboctahedrons, which are geometric shapes consisting of eight triangular and 18 square faces.

"The concept evolved to link Kellogg Community College disciplines in an abstract allusion to flower forms, seed pods, molecular models, etc." Kalnins said. "I was also interested in the visual contrast of geometric vs. organic elements and the center of the installation."

For the center, Kalnins designed a tray that allows water to rise to the top of the uppermost rhombicuboctahedron before cascading down around the center area of the sculpture. "I hope the design will be appreciated by a wide range of visitors and students in diverse areas of study, including math, science, humanities and the arts," he said. Kalnins is a retired surgical registered nurse first assistant, master electrician and, with his wife Willy, is a previous owner of Stone's Throw and Little Pebble Art Gallery in Tekonsha. He also is an award-winning artist whose works are displayed in numerous art venues throughout the state.

For more information about Kalnins and his work, visit him online at www.artintheeye.org.

KCC baseball earns MCCAA Conference title

BATTLE CREEK, May 7, 2012 – After winning a pair of big games on Saturday, Kellogg Community College has earned first-place honors as the top team in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Conference.

The final ranking followed the Bruins' double-header sweep of Jackson Community College on Saturday, May 5, at home at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

Eric Laskovy, the Bruins' head coach, said had the team split victories with JCC they would've wound up in a three-way tie for first in the conference with Grand Rapids Community College and Macomb Community College. Had they lost both games, they would've finished third.

"Our goal is always to win conference and then put ourselves in position to make a regional run," Laskovy said. "We are very excited." The No. 1 ranking in the MCCAA makes the Bruins the No. 1 seed in the upcoming National Junior College Athletic Association's 2012 Region XII Baseball District Championship, which Kellogg Community College will host at Battle Creek's Bailey Park May 11 through 14.

Kellogg's championship run makes 2012 the sixth year the Bruins have won the MCCAA championship in baseball since the year 2000. Their latest championship run was in 2010. Though the team is ranked first going into the NJCAA regionals this year, Laskovy is hesitant to put too much weight on the ranking. After all, the team won the tournament last year after entering as the lowest seed.

"Our region has become really strong, and any of the eight teams competing in the tournament are capable of winning," he said. Going into regionals, Laskovy said, there's no doubt that pitching is the team's strength, though he also noted that the team has started to play more consistent defense. Keys for success in the upcoming tournament include acing "routine, fundamental plays" and playing more aggressive offense. "We know we're gonna have to play our best baseball," he said.

The team will play their first game of the regional tournament at 3 p.m. Friday, May 11, against Ohio's Cuyahoga Community College on Robert Nichols Field in Bailey Park. For more information about the baseball program at Kellogg Community College, contact KCC's athletic department at 269-965-4151 or visit www.kellogg.edu/athletics/baseball/index.html.

Six teams including five from the MCCAA and one team from the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) will compete for each district.

The baseball tournament will see eight teams vying for a single District Champion title, including six from the MCCAA and two southern Region XII teams. The Region XII District Baseball Champion will go on to compete in the NJCAA's Division II Baseball National Championships scheduled for May 26 through June 2 in Enid, Okla.

Events on the field will be preceded by coaches meetings that will include nominations and voting for the NJCAA All-Region and All-American teams. The events will conclude with awards ceremonies including honors for individual and team champions and runners-up, Tournament Most Valuable Player, and Coach of the Year.

Tickets for the events must be purchased onsite and cost $5 per day for adults and $3 per day for senior citizens 65 and older and for children younger than 12. Children under the age of 2 will be admitted free.

The Bruins baseball team last year won their tournament after entering as the lowest seed and finished fourth out of 10 teams in the following national tournament.
